Frequently Asked Questions

What type of water can I use in my Philips Steam Iron or Steamer?

Using the right type of water helps prolong your Philips garment steamer or steam iron's lifespan. Please read along to find some tips and tricks.

Water type to use
Your Philips steam iron or garment steamer has been designed to be used with tap water. However, if you live in an area with hard water, fast scale build-up may occur.

Therefore, to prolong the lifespan of your iron or steamer it is recommended to use distilled or demineralized water (50% demineralized water mixed with tap water could be used too).

Please do not use perfumed water, water from the tumble dryer, vinegar, starch, descaling agents, ironing aids, chemically descaled water or other chemicals as they may cause water spitting, brown staining or damage to your steam iron.

To perfume your clothes we recommend you choosing one of the following options:

• Using perfumed washing softener

• Using essential oils (aromas) during washing

• Spraying perfumed water after ironing.

How can I clean the soleplate of my Philips Steam Iron?

When the soleplate of your Philips Iron or Steam Generator has a stain or fabric stuck to it, find out how to simply clean it in the following lines.

Instructions to clean the soleplate of your Philips Iron

If you want to clean the soleplate of your Philips Iron, please use the cleaning stick GC012 and follow the cleaning instructions below:

1. Unplug the iron and place it on its heel with a piece of rag cotton cloth underneath

2. Apply the cleaning stick over the dirty area once or twice

3. Wipe the dirty area and liquid from the soleplate with the piece of cotton cloth

4. Clean off the remaining wax in the steam vents with a cotton bud and by steam ironing over the rag cloth

Note:

The soleplate is hot, please do not touch it with bare hands. During cleaning, some fumes will be emitted from the melted cleaning stick material. Do not ingest cleaning stick. Keep the cleaning stick away from children.

Auto Shut-off mode

A light is blinking blue in your Philips Steam Generator Iron:

If your steam generator iron is switched on and the blue power light or the LED light on the handle is blinking but the soleplate stays cold, your steam generator iron might be in auto shut-off mode.

When your iron has not been used for 5 to 10 minutes, it enters in auto shut-off mode. To use it again, please press the on/off button.

The heating up light is flashing in your Philips Steam Iron:

If your steam iron is left unused horizontally for more than 30 seconds, or vertically (heel rest) for more than 8 minutes, it switches off automatically for safety reasons. When this happens, the heating up light flashes. Move the iron to turn it on and it will start heating.

The iron does not switch on anymore

If this is the case, there might be an internal electric problem with your iron. In this case, we recommend you to contact us.

My Philips iron sizzles when I place it on its heel

When your Philips iron produces a sizzling noise when you place it on its heel, find out here why this happens.

A sizzling noise is normal
It is normal for your Philips iron to produce a sizzling noise when you place it on its heel. It is the sound of water coming into contact with the soleplate’s steam chamber walls.

Do not worry: the performance of your iron is not affected at all by this.
